RB Hooks Bio

Mr. Hooks has been in the IT industry for over 32 years.  He worked at the National Security Agency (NSA) providing mainframe operating system support, system level programming, enterprise database design, data management strategies, storage management architectures, and application coding support.  He joined StorageTek in 1990 supporting customers in addressing storage management challenges, interfacing new technologies, providing programming support and integration, and architecting sound SAN solutions. He has served in positions of System Engineering, System Engineering Management, Product Marketing, Sales, Sales Management, Storage Strategist, Director of Advanced Programs, and Chief Systems Technologist. His current position is Hardware CTO, under the Office of the CTO, for Oracle’s National Security Group.  He is a featured speaker at user groups and conferences on behalf of Independent Software Vendors, partners, and Oracle’s National Security Group.  He participates in activities related to storage architectures, data security product specifications/working groups, data management strategies, and has served on Government sponsored working groups.

In his current position, he is focused on the development of strategies, architectures, and technology to solve business/mission problems while assisting Oracle engineering efforts in support of customer information management requirements. These include items such as Data Classification, Data Movement, Data Management, Security of Data at Rest, Object Oriented Storage, and the new focus on storage systems with embedded data services, such as hierarchical storage management, file-level versioning, file-level replication, backup, DR/BC, file-level de-duplication, and policy-based technology migration. The evolution of multi-core COTS systems and engineered proprietary chips are leading to more intelligent policy based storage systems which separate the application from the physical attributes of the storage system, eliminating the ever present restrictions of the age old POSIX compliant filesystem. His latest focus is on the development of “cloud-based” services utilizing evolving open standards while minimizing data centers costs.
